Week Three

 This week beagan with another presentation for out group game, seeing as we have had more members join, i have changed roles from lead artist to lead animator as we had no animators, therefore after the resentation Sioban was very impressed with the groups progress and asked that in the next presentation we have a specific list of peoples roles within the group and who is keeping to their roles and who isnt, this is so that the production can go alot more smoothly.

Also during this week of game contexts I found more words i did not understand the meanings of in the readings Sioban had asked us to complete summaries for, "the video game theory reader 2", "Understanding video games" and "An introduction to game studies: games in culture", from these three readings i found the following words that i did not understand;

 Epistomology
 Dialectics
 Ontology

 During the lesson, Sioban asked for a write up about the very first game i could remember playing and the games i have played since up until deciding to come to university, then a breif reason why i decided to come to university, the reason behind this was to get everyone to talk about how they had come to this point in their life and compare them all for similarities allowing us to see how games have affected out decisions in life if at all.

 The main point for this week will deffinately have to be the critical analysis of our pasts and comparing them to each others to see what affects games have had on our decisions, i found this very interesting and believe it could be useful in the future.

Week Two

 On the second week, i obtained my 'reader', this contains numerous snipets of different readings to do with game studies it is designed to give the reader multiple inputs of knowledge about game studies from different points of veiw and perspectives, ultimately giving the reader vast knowledge allowing them to, properly, talk about games achademically.

 Upon recieving the reader Sioban insisted that we read through the reading "Studying video games", which we had a photocopy of from the first week to read, so that if any of us are unclear she can help us understand, i thought this was very helpful as it allowed me to get a firm grip and understanding of what the reading was about and how to approach it and all other readings.

 While reading multiple words came up that i didnt know of or understand these being;

 Convergance: where two medias are combined together e.g film and games combine together and each gains from the other feild.

 Transfer: where something is very literally transfered from one area of expertise over to another.

 Sioban explained that it is very important that we mark down any phrases or words we do not understand so that we can later find out what they mean.

 I also partook in a group presentation for the group 2D game i am working in, we presented our ideas to Sioban and David about our game concept, 'When frogs attack', showing concept art we had come up with along with a story line. After the presentation we recieved feedback from Sioban and David commenting on how they think we presented and what they thought of the idea, Both said that we presented fairly well and just needed to work on our confidence and style of presentation and both said there were aspects of the game they like but some aspects they would like to see worked on such as concept art for our Scientist and perhaps a different idea for the Frog queen, all of which will be presented again in the following week.

 Personally i believe the most important gain i have had from Game Contexts this week is, learning the best way to approach the readings and define words i dont understand. However i also found the advice given to me for concept art on our group game to be significantly helpful as it was very specific constructive criticism which i always welcome as it will help me improve my skills.

Week One

This is my first post for game contexts, as game contexts links very closely with 2d games design there is little i can post in this blog, instead i will be posting things that are relative to this unit anything i learn that i find to be very interesting along with any other things such as any new bits of knowledge I may gain due to this unit.

The first week of contexts consisted mostly of introducing myself to the class and talking about memerable games. We also spoke of 2d games and researched 'Plants vs Zombies, however i find that this linked in better with 2D games so if this takes your interest please make your way to my blog on 2D games, since the first lesson of contexts was very much linked in with 2D games there is little i can comment on, however i can confirm that i did gain more insight into the gaming industry after being spoken to by Sioban our game contexts lecturer.

 I also obtained a photocopy of a reading "studying video games" this was given to me and the rest of the class by Sioban and she asked that we read through it and write a summary on it, due next week, this was so that Sioban will be able to tell if we understand how to present the readings in summary form and read through them properly.

 I learned specifically of various heirachy's within the gaming industry, i found this to be the main point of interest for me as it can be helpful when thinking of what area i may be interested in and seeing where it is on the heirachy.
